Not huge. But then again, there was a government grant of $600k given to a group of students that wanted to debate whether or not (a a cultural basis) a burrito could be considered a sandwich.

So if we word it correctly, or if we find a good enough purpose?

For example, what if we tried to make this the first locally sustainable city? All food grown/raised locally? It would mean everyone in the town would have to give up eating a shitton of meat and people would have to get involved in farming and shit.

But I bet there'd be a holy ton of press, and the odds of winning a grant.

Maybe not something so extreme, but something as a social experiment like that, I think we could win a grant for.

We would just need to be fully qualified to do what we intend to.

see if it is possible to run a town with no money?
everything we own/eat we make
we trade favours
and generaly just help each other
say its an experiment
posibly say its a new religion that requires us to live in the same town

Impossible to live without money. Now we are talking communist state and I say fuck that.

Who is going to want to farm out in the heat rather than be a "computer tech" and sit in AC all day and jack off to porn.

Do not propose moneyless society. Bad bad bad

Just saying "We can grow our own food" would probably not be enough, that's what the fucking Pilgrims had to do to survive.

But, if we get a few engineerfags together, we could say we would like to develop methods of alternative energy, and are using the town as a way to test the sustainability of these methods, or something along those lines. Then, the rest of Anon who wants to live there can say they are there to keep the town functioning, and to test the energy methods on common tasks in most towns.

Basically, we say we are trying to build a town with sustainable, alternative energy. The government will eat it up.

There's the winning idea. Anyone who has a dream about alternate energy gets whatever the fuck they want. Now we need to lawyer up and apply for a grant.

You underestimate what it means to grow our own food. The pilgrims did it because it's not like they had any other option. Those were the times and that was the way things were done, then.

I forget that people don't have any idea what a big deal a sustainable food source is. The government would jump on it like flies on a cow pie. Do you have any idea what going on with farms and food sources in America today? The problems? The government is paying farmers all over the US to *not* grow anything.

Just saying, don't knock the idea. If you think it's that easy (haha) why not give it a try.

a religionless town.
no atheism.. just a total absence of thought about deities and whatnot.

a study to see if religion is hindering progress.

There are actually some of us that I'm sure are religious. I don't think it would sit well with them.

What if we just sold the idea as a straight up guinea pig town? What happens when a bunch of people get together and decide to start a town. Instead of coming over on the Mayflower, we come by car an show up in one place.

it'd be fun, something we'd like to see.. but you wouldnt get a grant for that. you might get a reality tv show, but no grant.

What I've read across the whole forum is this:

We propose a town whose individuals know nothing about one another, other than their willingness to join in the effort. they come together to resurrect a ghost town that is quickly becoming nothing more than a pile of old wood. we plan to experiment with and eventually rely on alternate energy sources, namely turbines and solar energy.

not only does this attract attention from alternate energy corporations, it would probably attract a little attention from sociologist, and possibly even the media. maybe a documentary or two as well?

Exactly. It sounds like an amazing idea. All we need now is an official website and a way to pool money together (Safely).

thats sort of all the aspects tied together. The alternate energy thing is a good one to have down.. seeing if alternate energy can support a town is relevant to the governments interests.

there are services where you enter the amount of money you want to "donate" and then if the desired amount of money is not gathered then all of the money is sent back to the person that "donated" them

I've got a dedicated host for us, as well as a couple developers to work on the site, I could set up a paypal that all the money is pooled into, and if it doesn't work out properly, issue a refund, but I don't want to have everyone's money, too much risk, and liability.

how much would it cost to hire a professional to do the banking for us? to set up a REAL account with the same properties as the ones with donor and fund caps? like, if we don't reach the goal and/or the land sells and we'd rather not relocate, it's all refunded, and the money can only be used to purchase land for the purpose of a settlement of sorts. obviously i don't know the terminology, but i'm sure it's doable.

Don't mention /b/ anywhere before we get the grants.
Mkay?
Say we're trying to create a self sustaining town, that will have its own energy sources, food production, and entertainment.
Say if this works it could change the future of towns in the US, it could help us get out of debt if more towns were like this.

Outside of government grants there are also private investments. Google has a shitload of money and they're always looking to spend it on innovative ideas. GoldenPalace.com is known for spending money just to generate publicity.

I would think it'd be possible to finance the entire town if we were willing to drink at the GoldenPalace.com Saloon.

Ok, underage fag here. I'm upper middle class so I don't need to buy my own groceries or how ever poor kids grow up. I know me and my little group of btard friends would love to see this go through sence we have all been lurking for 2-3 years now. So if you guys actually get going with accounts and shitxme and my 4-5 friends will all spread the word and donate as much as possible. Remember the underage fags don't have lots for cash but there are lots of them willing throw $10 $20 or $100 at somthing like this.

A self-sustaining city is by far and away our best course of action. Not only will it put us in line for grants, it will actually make the sustainability of the project a reality, not to mention generate a lot of hype in the media which = profit.

A bio-dome type thing lol

If the self-sustaining/alternative energy idea was the basis, there are tons of people who would love to come visit the town at a hotel with a "visitors" package that included a tour and a way to get hands on with the town's process for a few days to a week. This could be a decent source of income, especially initially when it is still a curiosity.

Doesn't Google like to make Google towns and shit? We put up some billboards and they give a shitton of money? I'll look into that and report back with my findings.

We would become part of the Google botnet though
