We've been tossing around the idea of compulsory room-mates, but we should discuss this further.

45~ acres is not a kingdom, gentlemen. We need to discuss housing.

45 acres is enough to build barrack style housing (dorm style) community bathrooms and such

I was just about to make a thread like this, and yes we may not like being that close but for the first bit we will have to, we just simply will not have enough land. I think this sounds quite good actually ^^

Edit: I think this will be the hardest part of getting everyone together. It seems allot of people think that everyone will have their own plot and have their own house. We just can't do that, if we did we would not be able to grow anything. When you have a limited space and still have to be self sufficient you have to consolidate your people together in the most efficient housing (IE Barracks) That way there is more space for food and energy generation.

Also a 2nd idea would be to use the Gym as a part time barracks, We could set up beds, or just make pallets on the floor, and then move them after everyone gets up. Personally I think this will be our best bet for the first few weeks till we can get something substantial.

it sounds like a lot, but eventually when people will want to start building houses and roads and stuff, i think it will become more cramped.

has anyone taken into consideration the amount of vehicles that will be driven there and needed to be stored?

I think this is only a concern for later as initially the town will just be work crews of anons going over everything and cleaning up and taking stock of everything we own.

It looks like there's lots of different buildings in town from the videos as well as structures to live in, as well as fallen down buildings and lumber to be recovered and land to be cleared.

Also keep in mind, we want space to grow stuff, business structures, power generation, infrastructure, etc. As well as building setup, wiring to the grid, plumbing to whatever sewer system exists in town. Not to mention if we're shooting for gov energy grants then that means building houses out of efficient materials and insulation and the solar paneling on top etc etc.

I honestly think we need to think about building up and down. To the sky! To the core!

i think down would be extremely beneficial. on the chans, a few people that claim to live in the area have chided the plan with things such as "nobody ever lives in SD during the winter unless they have to." and "my advice is stock up before winter. the roads close fast. and after they open, stock up again, becuase there's no telling how long they'll be open". that being said, having an underground portion(or even majority?) of every building underground would solve this problem quite a bit.

As well as if the buildings can be connected underground by passageways and such.

Building down is unrealistic, the machinery needed to create a non-third worldish system underground alone would cost in the hundreds of thousands. Building up, however, is much more cost efficient, space efficient and realistic. However, we'd probably need to outsource the work to a contractor or some organization that has the capacity and the means to undertake an engineering/construction endeavor of that magnitude. Also, all buildings have to be in accordance with the Dept. of Housing and Urban Development's specifications (whatever they may be, I don't deal with construction).

I have. In a few years it'll be the biggest trailer sale on this side of the Mississippi.

I've also been considering the area of the town. Being mostly in the middle of nowhere, there is a shit-ton of open space that we can buy up as we expand.

That said, I live in an area which is smaller than 300sq/ft. I share this area with another human being and a cat. I'm sure we can find a way to fit 200 people in 46 acres.

lol our population is not going to be as big as most think. 200 might be pushing it a bit, I don't think there will be more than 50 anons show up from the get go to start this off. Maybe more will come after the infrastructure has been set but until then I don't see it.

Yeah, I was thinking 200 best (worst) case scenario, 50 if we're lucky.

I was kind of hoping if we get a HUGE response for this, we could put a cap on 50 or so for several months to a year, and then allow more people to come in, maybe on a monthly basis? If we can add more control to the situation, we can make our odds better of not getting in over our heads.

I also think that we should use those with something to offer, if we get there and have a bunch of neckbeards who sleep during the day and troll /b/ at night then we're fucked. I like the idea of 50 and possibly 75 to start. I honestly want a good diverse population too. Traps, Gays, Straights, Natives, Whites, (normal) Blacks, Hispanic, Asians, Guys and Girls.

How are we determining what 50 are allowed in? Will there be a list?

Should we make people write resumes?

I'd think depending on the housing situation initially need plenty of muscle power, but since it's privately held land and they're not paying rent or in any agreement, anyone can be kicked out if they don't contribute

I doubt the town has fast net anyway or a comfortable neckbeard chill area lol

I'm honestly down for a resume, one that we can actually check up on, as well I'm all for an essay outlining why you think you'd be beneficial to the community

Alright so if we're going to do resumes, this begs a few questions:

The largest portion of people applying are 18. What are we going to do with resumes that have no official work experience? Speaking from experience, there's really no good reason not to have a job before you turn the age of 18. Unless you put all of your effort into school (and have results to show for it) or spent time volunteering, or some alternative situation that made it impossible for some reason or another, there's no really any reason I can think of other than straight up comfortable-as-I-am laziness.

If we're going to be following up on resumes with references, how will we know we aren't speaking to ApplicantAnon's three buddies?

The nature of following references is a little silly, too. Who wants anons calling their professional references and explaining that they are possibly interested in moving to the middle of Misery, South Dakota to join a colony of weirdos? How would we handle that? Pretend we're a more srs sounding job?

Maybe we could interview every potential applicant, and allow them in every month, in bulk?
otherwise this town is gonna be nothing but pedos

Maybe some Anon's who are serious about this idea should consider investing in mobile homes, RV's, shit like that. Obviously barrack style housing, communal housing and what not should be the main form of housing. Maybe even building our own houses? It all depends on the sort of people we attract to the town. If we styled ourselves after a voluntary society and valued the free market, we'd attract a lot of people who have hands on skills, enough to build their own shit and farm land and whatnot. Just saying, free market economics is legit.

I suggest those old style Japanese houses were they had a bunch of people living in them at the same time, sorry I do not remember the name but anyone who has watched enough anime will know what I am talking about.

I vote yes to roommates being necessary. We could set up a few houses with bunk beds and everyone could live comfortably. Also in order to maintain our possessions we should have a row of lockers from an old high school that we could put our stuff in.
